The painting was influenced by Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints like many of his works and those by other artists of the time. The similarities occur with strong outlines, unusual angles, including close-up views, and also flattish local colour (not modelled according to the fall of light).

Its first owner was the French art critic and anarchist Octave Mirbeau who was also one of Van Gogh's first supporters. Mirbeau paid 300 francs for it.

In 1987, it became the most expensive painting ever sold, setting a record which stood for two and a half years. Then it was sold for US$53.9 million to Alan Bond, but Bond did not have enough money to pay for it. Irises was later re-sold in 1990 to the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles. Irises is currently (as of 2012) tenth on the inflation-adjusted list of most expensive paintings ever sold and in 25th place if the effects of inflation are ignored.

Irises is one of several painitngs of irises by the Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh, and one of a series of paintings he executed at the Saint Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France, in the last year before his death in 1890.
Van Gogh started producing Irises and landscape paintings with it within a week of entering the asylum, in May 1889, working from nature in the hospital garden. There is a lack of the high tension which is seen in his later works. He called painting "the lightning conductor for my illness" because he felt that he could keep himself from going insane by continuing to paint.

With the success of his paintings at the exhibition, many similar paintings followed as well as by jack vettriano and tamara de lempicka until his eventual death in 1890.

The ownership status of van Gogh irises has an interesting twist behind it compared to other paintings from the same artist, and edward hopper, diego rivera and frida kahlo. Julien Tanguy was a familiar client of van Gogh that had purchased a lot of previous works from him, usually painting portraits. Something about irises struck Tanguy and led to him buying it, but he still later sold it to Octave Mirbeau, an art critic. This was in 1892 when support for van Gogh was still strong after his death, and Mirbeau was one of the biggest supports of the late painter. At the time, it was sold to him for only 300 francs, very lower than Las Meninas and Rembrandt Night Watch. It wasn’t until 1987 that iris van Gogh would become the most expensive painting ever purchased. Alan Bond purchased the painting for 53.9 million, breaking a high sale record that had stood for over two and a half years.
